| The study
of Art is important in increasing visual and aesthetic awareness.
It promotes independence in the skills and qualities of imagining,
problem solving, analysing and sensitivity. Communicating ideas
and feelings, Art is a language which complements other more scientific,
mathematical or factually based subjects. The method of working
in the Department demands individual initiative and independence,
thereby promoting personal responsibility and self-discipline. Through
the opportunities and the individual achievements it promotes, students
experience satisfaction and enjoyment, together with increased self-esteem
and confidence.
At Camp Hill the emphasis is on Fine Art. In Years 7 & 8,
pupils’ work is characterised by the need to understand the
reality surrounding them. These are important foundation years,
when pupils receive a strong grounding in the basic skills of drawing,
painting, 3D work, textiles and design. Year 9 pupils are encouraged
to discover that Art can convey personal and significant meaning,
particularly through sculpture. The study of artists’ work
is incorporated into most projects and pupils are taught to articulate
fluently in their responses and analyses.
The standard of GCSE and AS/A2 work regularly results in exceptionally
sensitive and individual artwork.
Visits to London and other art galleries are arranged and positively
encouraged. Extra lunchtime and after school sessions are offered,
providing further opportunity for pupils to take advantage of the
facilities and expertise offered by the Department.
Pupils’ achievements are recognised in various ways and
their work is celebrated by being displayed throughout the school.
The Art Department has links with the community and pupils’
work is submitted for art exhibitions and competitions.
