At Camp Hill, pupils develop the ability to solve demanding problems, to think on their feet, to reason logically, to explain their thought processes using precise language and to apply technology appropriately... and that’s just in Mathematics lessons!

Mathematics is a challenging and exciting subject, often described as ‘exercise for the brain’. It is satisfying to study in its own right and continues to be highly valued by employers in all fields.

Mathematics is an ancient subject, which is very much alive at Camp Hill today. 2008-2009 is an exciting year for us, as we enter our 4th year of Mathematics and Computing Status. In 2007-2008 our already strong department went from strength to strength, offering additional support sessions for Year 7 and the sixth form, plus extra mathematical enrichment activities. The results for the GCSE Statistics were outstanding, with 94.1% of pupils gaining an A or A* grade at the end of year 10..

In addition to expanding our in-house activities, we have formed many new partnerships with other primary and secondary schools in the area. These have included providing mathematical workshops to extend able Year 6 pupils, offering staff training, supporting GCSE pupils with coursework and working with yr3 children to bake cakes!

In 2008-2009 we shall be implementing a range of strategies to further improve attainment, plus extending the range of enrichment opportunities for mathematics offered to Camp Hill pupils. We also have in place plans to increase the range and extent of support offered to our partner schools. Watch this space!

From Year 7 through to Year 13, pupils learn mathematical techniques in number, algebra, geometry, probability and data handling. We consider the abstract beauty and elegance of proofs, while also learning about the applications of Mathematics in a range of contexts. Pupils are encouraged to discuss and develop their ideas with their peers and are given regular and thorough feedback on the progress they make. Regular professional development for staff ensures that we are kept up to date with new initiatives and are constantly evaluating and refining our own classroom practice. The latest technology is used to enhance pupils own understanding.

Exam results at Key Stage 3 and GCSE are excellent and the majority of the year 12 chooses to study Mathematics in the sixth form, again obtaining outstanding results; a real achievement for Camp Hill, given the national decline in popularity of Mathematics. Many students go on to study degrees which contain Mathematics as a key element.
