Music has an assured place in any educational curriculum.

Civilisations from the Ancient Greeks onwards have recognised its value in defining cultures, bonding communities, imparting discipline both physical and mental, developing creativity and expressing the inexpressible.

Camp Hill Girls’ has a busy and thriving Music Department. There are 1.5 classroom teachers and 14 specialist instructors. The Department is housed in its own specialist Music Block comprising 2 large, well-equipped teaching rooms, 3 practice rooms, an office and a store room. Music IT facilities have recently been installed and are a developing area. A copious array of instruments, classroom and orchestral mean that the block is rarely a quiet area of the school!

Music throughout the school is taught via Performing, Listening and Composing and there is a consistent emphasis on “hands-on” learning. KS3 music delivers the National Curriculum through a variety of units including Film Music, African Drumming, Indian Music and War Music. KS4 music attracts large numbers of girls and works towards the OCR specification of Music GCSE. KS5 music delivers the OCR AS and A2 in Music jointly with Camp Hill Boys’ School thus allowing a new dimension of learning in mixed sets for the sixth form. Students regularly go on to study music at university or at one of the music colleges having received this thorough and enjoyable grounding in the subject.

A vast array of extracurricular music takes place in every available non-teaching time of the school day and attracts large numbers of enthusiastic musicians. Many of the ensembles are run jointly with the Boys’ School and concerts are given every term. Concert venues include Symphony Hall, the Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Town Hall, Birmingham Cathedral and local churches. From chamber groups to 70-piece symphony orchestras to gospel choirs and jazz bands there truly is something for everyone at Camp Hill!
