Wednesday 16th July brought heavy rain and cold weather, but that didn’t stop the cast and crew of Shakespeare on the Lawn; the entire show upped sticks and headed for the school hall. Eager viewers poured in to see a term’s worth of hard work from a wealth of talented young actresses and dancers. The audience was treated to abridged adaptations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet.
The first half boasted an excellent cast of Year Seven students, all keen to seize their moment in the limelight. Puck’s wit shone from the stage, and Bottom had everyone in hysterics during the tragic demise of Pyramus. Hermia’s feisty performance even scared the teachers, making the perfect counterpart to Helena’s repressed bitterness. You could’ve cut the tension with a knife when Demetrius and Lysander sparred their explosive encounters mellowed by the cool stage presence of our very own fairy queen.
After a short break, the audience settled down for what promised to be a breathtaking second half. The tragedy of that most famous of love stories was perfect after the earlier comedy, and our Eights and Nines did not disappoint. The moving portrayal of Tybalt’s and Mercutio’s deaths wowed the audience, and Juliet’s effortless fragility coupled with Romeo’s brooding charm was a match made in heaven. We particularly enjoyed the Capulets’ cruel-to-be-kind parenting policy; the formidable duo commanded their daughter and audience alike.
The whole evening was a resounding success, and hugely enjoyable for all involved. Well done everyone!.
