The Year 11 Careers Conference was a great success this year thanks to the support of our parents and volunteers organised for us by our advisor, Esta Leawal, from XBL Works (previously known as Education Business Links). We had over 25 visitors with us for the day representing doctors, dentists, solicitors, actors, engineers, emergency planners, tax consultants, university-based researchers, performance managers and the armed services. The pupils had the opportunity to work in groups of 3 or 4 and to speak to 6 or 7 of the visitors about their job role, the qualifications needed and the training required. Many pupils spoke positively about the day; quotes such as “Much better than expected” and “I didn’t realise there were so many different jobs available” could be heard down the corridors as they left to go to their interviews. The event certainly meets one of its key aims, which is to broaden pupils’ experience of the world of work by meeting people from within work as part of their Work Related Learning curriculum. In order to enable the day to be tailored to our pupils’ work plans we would benefit from having access to additional visitors in the health-related professions and those for whom foreign language skills are useful.
If you or a relative may be willing to help us at future events, please contact the school and leave a message for Dr Rose.
