18 Year 11 girls studying French and German GCSE attended the University of Birmingham’s Specialist Schools’ Language Day on 31st March. This was a fantastic opportunity to participate in a challenging university level seminar in French or German, after which everyone took a further seminar in Mandarin Chinese, Italian or Japanese ab initio (from scratch!). After lunch in the Guild of Students’ building and a tour of the impressive university campus (with extra insider-tips from the friendly language student ambassadors!) everyone reconvened for a though-provoking introductory lecture to Film Studies. The Language Day enabled our pupils to experience a day in the life of a languages student and also showed us all how our enjoyment of languages does not necessarily have to stop after Year 11. The final speaker showed us some of the numerous degree courses which enable students to combine languages with other disciplines; for example, Business Studies, Law, Mathematics, Politics can all be combined with languages and most Science and Engineering courses offer a language option. Such courses also feature a student year abroad, a unique experience which can also enhance your CV.
