Congratulations go to Bethan Dovey (12Y), who was proclaimed the winner of the Soroptimist International
(Midland Region) Schools Public Speaking Competition, held on Saturday 11 July at the Tally Ho Conference
Centre, Edgbaston.
Bethan produced a superb performance at this challenging event, addressing an audience of over 100 professional
and business women, all members of the Soroptimist International (SI) organisation. She spoke on the subject “Adults reading Harry Potter is just infantile escapism”—an interesting choice from a list which included more
standard topics on racism, world peace and politics—and she impressed the audience and the judges with her
skilful balance of witty humour and serious points. The other contestants came from state schools across the
Midlands region and all gave excellent speeches with clarity and confidence.
SI is an international women’s service organization which works actively to raise funds and awareness to help the
disadvantaged, and in particular to raise the status of women globally. A distinguished former headteacher of
CHG, Miss Joan Miller, was a longstanding member of the local SI Birmingham Central club and it was this link
which led to Bethan being selected as a contestant this year.
Bethan was awarded a £100 cheque for herself and was presented with the impressive Midland Arden Region
Trophy which is to be held by the School for one year.
