A group of Year 12 & 13 History and Politics students accompanied by Mrs Clements, Miss Preedy and Mrs Johnson set out on Friday 23 October for a visit to Berlin. After negotiating the trials of Luton airport and Easyjet, finding the coach at Schoenfeld Airport Berlin was no problem. We arrived at our hotel early evening having spotted a reconstruction of the wall and some other famous landmarks. The students set to discovering the games room, trying out the German food and talking late into the night in their rooms. An early start saw this intrepid group tackle buying tickets at the automated machine on the U-bahn. Accompanied by our guide Ross we managed to visit the Reichstag with its magnificent dome, the Soviet War Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, the site of Hitler’s bunker and some areas of the old East Berlin all before lunch!
Potsdamer Platz was an ideal lunch spot with enough variety to suit all tastes. Suitably refreshed we headed off to the ex-Nazi Air Ministry building, one of the few surviving buildings from the 1930s and admired the Soviet artwork on the walls. This was followed by a look at a small part of the original wall, then a sobering visit to the Topography of Terror, an outdoor museum showing the effects of both the Nazi and the Soviet totalitarian regimes on the people of Germany. A short walk away was Checkpoint Charlie and the students were able to find out more about the divided city.
