On 18th October, very early on Sunday morning, 40 Year 9 Camp Hill girls met up at school ready to face the long drive to Normandy. After a long and gruelling journey by coach, we arrived at the wonderful Le Clos de l’Ancien Pressoir in the village of Commes, a former cider press which has been transformed into a residential educational centre. We were warmly greeted by the owners and promptly set off for a walk to the nearby beach to stretch our legs. Normandy has a rich history and we were surrounded by delightful medieval buildings as well as reminders of the D-Day landings.

Our itinerary was action packed with a mixture of language lessons in the Pressoir and trips out in the local area. We visited Caen and its castle – stopping off at the grave of William the Conqueror – as well as Bayeux to see the famous tapestry. As an extra treat, we visited Caramels d’Isigny, a working caramel factory to have a tour of the factory and to taste lots of free samples! The girls had some free time to explore the local towns and to practise their French on unsuspecting shop keepers! Guided walks on the Normandy cliff tops and nearby beaches were most informative and the girls were very moved by the trip to the American cemetery at Omaha Beach as well as the British cemetery at Bayeux
