Forty Year 9 pupils from Camp Hill Girls’ and Boys’ Schools took part in activities organised by Coventry and
Aston Universities, to give them an insight into how French is used in the workplace. In teams of 6 their task
was to design and sell a Christmas Cracker on the French market. This was quite a challenge, as crackers are
not part of a traditional French Christmas and pupils had to consider social and cultural factors as well as
production costs, prices and advertising strategies. They then had to present their ideas, using both French and
English, to guest judges - David Hollier from Barclays, and Ifor Lewis from HSBC.
The winning team, made up of Sophie Hobbs, Adrianna Whittle, Selina Khan and Haridha Pandian form Camp
Hill Girls’ and Matthew Childs and Daunsih Nagargar from Camp Hill Boys’. received either French language
books or books on Paris.
The day proved a lot of fun for all participants, who left with a clearer idea of the difference between everyday
language and the more formal style of business language.
