One study period, early on a Monday morning, I decided to apply to become a member of the audience on Question Time when it came to Birmingham. I never dreamed that I would possibly get on, but filled in the questionnaire with enthusiasm, outlining my political views on everything from the war in Afghanistan to whom I would vote for if there was an election tomorrow. I filled it in and sent it off, before promptly forgetting all about it and attempting to fill in my UCAS form, yet again.
A week or so later, I got home to find my parents beaming. They explained that whilst I had been at school, I had had a phone call from the BBC, and that I should ring them back. So I did, confirming all my answers to the questionnaire, and was given information as to venue and time.
And so, on the 22nd September, I made my way to the MAC in Cannon Hill Park, excited and nervous and hoping that I would get the opportunity to speak. We had to be there at 5pm, but the filming didn’t start until 7pm, so there was quite a lot of milling around and chatting to the other people in the audience. Everyone was really nice, and I calmed down a lot. And then it started. The panel consisted of Vince Cable, Harriet Harman, Ian Hislop, Priti Patel and the founder of Mumsnet, Justine Roberts. There was a lot of lively discussion and I managed to contribute and put forward my view about the economy. It was a fantastic experience, and over way too fast. It’s something I’ll remember all my life, particularly David Dimbleby referring to me as the “lady in blue”. I can strongly recommend applying for things like this, as you never know who you might meet or what might happen.
