On Friday 23rd April, the birth date of the legendary writer William Shakespeare, Zoya Ahmed in Y8 won the
opportunity by the Iqbal Academy to recite one of the many great sonnets Shakespeare wrote at his birthplace.
This was at an event held in Stratford-upon-Avon to mark the celebration of the link between the two famous
poets - William Shakespeare and the most famous Pakistani poet to date, Mohammed Syed Allama Iqbal.
To begin the event, a member of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust provided the audience with background
information about Shakespeare including his life and his influence on the modern language. The talk really
emphasised Shakespeare’s genius and the way his works are still admired world-wide today. This was followed
by a short selection of traditional Pakistani music after which Zoya and 3 other competition winners read their
chosen selection of Shakespeare or Iqbal poetry. After this, they were all given the opportunity to go around
Shakespeare’s home and the surrounding gardens. After this they attended the unveiling of the plaque that was to
mark the day and the connection between the two writers.
When the unveiling was completed, they were treated to lunch and traditional Pakistani entertainment. Zoya said, “It was a great experience to be able to see the music players live along with their dancers on such a beautiful
sunny day whilst relaxing and eating. This was the highlight of the day. I feel it was a culture-rich programme
which was very successful in celebrating the works of two of the greatest writers of past times and in reminding
us all of their brilliance.”
