It’s not all academic!

The Sixth Form is the transitional stage between School and a career or higher education. It is the gateway to the outside world. Developing a mature and responsible attitude involves our students acting as role models within and beyond the School community, through their involvement in other activities. Service to the School – and wider community – as well as academic success underpins our ethos of excellence and opportunity.

There are many opportunities for students in both years of the Sixth Form to demonstrate leadership through a variety of extra-curricular and other activities. We strongly encourage all girls to make a contribution in this way to enhance their own skills and experience, whilst helping others. We encourage new and established students to take on the role of Prefect. A team of prefects assists the Head Girl and Deputies in a variety of scheduled and occasional events. Every year, a Senior Prefect team of students in Year 13 is nominated by peers and staff and they fulfil roles ranging from the Head and Deputy Girls, House Captains, Year Prefects to School Council Chairs. In Year 12, Prefects work with lower years in supporting Form Tutors. In addition, many Year 12s take on the role of mentor for students in subject areas. A team of trained Peer Mentors in Year 13 supports students from lower years in overcoming academic or other problems.

There are six houses in the School giving our students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, and numerous house activities are organised by Sixth Formers throughout the year. These include dance, drama and sporting competitions and the annual House Festival. Many charitable fund-raising events are also organised by House Captains and their teams.

The Joint Sixth Form Committee organises social events for all sixth formers in the Boys’ and Girls’ schools and oversees the use of the Common Rooms. This committee is the focus of sixth form social life. Each tutor group in Years 12 and 13 in the School has the opportunity of sending their representatives to the Sixth Form Council to discuss matters relating to the Sixth Form and whole School. These regular meetings between students and senior staff cement positive relationships and help to foster a shared vision.

There is an extensive range of wider activities students can get involved in including sport, Duke of Edinburgh, Young Enterprise, Engineering in Education and a huge variety of music ensembles and groups including Senior Orchestra. Many attend courses in preparation for their Higher Education applications such as Medlink and master classes such as Headstart. A number of students also complete Open University YASS modules and Sign Language qualifications each year. There is further opportunity for accreditation of students’ extra-curricular and enrichment through the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness. Sixth Formers also organise and run clubs and societies for younger students. These include Amnesty, Islamic Society, Christian Union, and French, Film, Drama and Dance clubs.

Admissions

We welcome applications from new students who share our high expectations and want to get actively involved in the wider life of the School and Sixth form. Every year, we offer places to a number of students from outside the School, wishing to join our community. Applicants from outside the School will need to complete an application form and are strongly recommended to attend the November Open Evening and to apply early. Students may be invited into School to discuss their subject choices. Existing Year 11 in Camp Hill Girls will receive advice about courses throughout the year, and an individual interview with senior staff.

Dress

All students are required to adhere to a Dress Code which reflects the high expectations and ethos of the Sixth Form. Sixth Formers are members of the School community who are expected to provide leadership and to act as role models for younger years.

Joining the Sixth Form

Almost all of our pupils stay on into the Sixth Form. We welcome pupils applying from other schools, although preference is given for existing pupils. Parents of external candidates wishing to enrol a pupil in the sixth form should contact the school. It is not necessary for parents of existing pupils to apply formally for places in Year 12. Admission is based upon an assessment of the pupil’s potential to benefit from the curriculum and facilities offered by the school. This assessment is based primarily upon the pupil’s educational record, including actual or anticipated examination results, with particular reference to achievement in the intended and related areas of study and may include a school visit. To achieve entry into the sixth form, prospective entrants, both existing pupils and external candidates, must achieve six GCSEs at grade B or above, which would include English and Mathematics. Students will usually need to have attained a grade A in those subjects they wish to continue to Advanced level. Offers of places in the Sixth Form will be conditional on achievement of these results and capacity on chosen courses. In the event of oversubscription preference will be given to: existing pupils; and then “looked after children” (in public care); and then those who live nearest to the school (according to straight-line distance between home and school).

Our main wish, however, is that students come with the intention of working hard and taking good advantage of the range of academic, extra curricular and social activities that we offer.

When deciding on your choice of subject it is important to take your GCSE grades and your future career aspirations into account when making this decision. Certain degree courses, such as medicine, have specific A level requirements and this will inevitably influence decisions. We advise students to talk to staff before starting any A-level course, especially if it is a new subject such as Psychology or Economics and Business Studies. The Sixth Form Open Evening provides an opportunity to meet and discuss issues with our staff.

All students at Camp Hill are required to study four Advanced Subsidiary (AS) courses during Year 12. All students all also required to study General Studies or Critical Thinking at AS. On moving into Year 13 students are then required to study three Advanced (A2) courses and General Studies.
